In an open letter addressed to the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, HRLP together with Amnesty International and 3 other NGOs active in the field of refugees and migrants’ rights in Greece, raises the alarm on the dire conditions and unlawful detention of refugees residing at the Samos CCAC.
Ahead of last year’s adoption of the EU Migration Pact, NGOs warned that reforms would place refugees and migrants “at heightened risk of human rights violations”, weaken safeguards and access to asylum, and lead to an expanded use of de facto detention at EU borders throughout screening and border procedures.
Since the opening of the Samos CCAC, Amnesty International and Samos-based NGOs have extensively documented violations experienced by people on the move residing in the camp, and have repeatedly highlighted the use of systematic unlawful and arbitrary detention.
However, despite the consistent efforts of civil society organizations to urge authorities to respond to the situation and take action to ensure the safety and dignity of the CCAC's residents, deplorable living conditions persist to this day, and newly arrived asylum seekers are systematically subjected to prolonged de-facto detention through so-called “restrictions of freedom” orders.
In the present letter, Amnesty International together with Human Rights Legal Project, Avocats Sans Frontières France, I Have Rights and Samos Volunteers, once again raise the alarm on the humanitarian crisis unfolding at the Samos CCAC, and urge the EU Commissioner to ensure that Greece upholds its international obligation and complies with human rights standards.
