HRLP Lawyer Dimitris Choulis will be representing Homayoun Sabetara on April 22 before the Three Member Court of Appeals of Thessaloniki. Homayoun has been unfairly imprisoned in Greece for more than 2 years, for driving a vehicle across the Greece-Turkey border after fleeing Iran.
Homayoun’s case serves as yet another reminder of the quasi-systematic criminalization of people on the move by Greek and EU authorities.
It serves as proof that the discriminatory treatment of individuals on the basis of their migration status can lead to serious violations of fundamental human rights -such as the right to a fair trial. As a defendant, Homayoun was denied “correct/adapted” translation services, exculpatory evidence was overlooked and witnesses were not called to testify.
By defending Homayoun Sabetara, HRLP stands with all people on the move who become victims of criminalization in their flight to safety.
We urgently call on the European and Greek authorities to put an end to the criminalization of migration and commit to respect, protect & fulfill the human rights of every individual.
